6/5/08 there will be a hearing for the re-zoning of 251 8th Street from a residential house to a group home.

The police are still attending to the dog complaints. If you have a complaint call the police with the information and they will talk with the owner.

Frank’s Market will be reopening as LB Market. The owner is a resident of the area and vows to run a good business.

Gas USA has a new owner and they will be applying for a new liquor license. We will request that council have a hearing on this so each side can state their concerns.

245 Gates – kids hanging out there all day. Seems to be a problem house.

****** 6/23/08 – There will be a new watch starting up. The West Side watch will have its 1st meeting 6/23 at 7pm at the police station.

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion.

Officers Welsh and Lantz represented the Police Department

The NIU – Neighborhood Impact Unit is up and running. 2 permanent officers and others working overtime to give additional coverage. They will focus on drug and street crimes in the South side.

200 block 14th street – basketball being played in the street.

Still problems at South Park with visitors cutting through the back.

Drug activity near East and Sederis.

There was discussion on using the drug dogs to search the high school. Call the Chief and voice your concerns and ask that this happens more often.

The fire damaged house on 17th street has been removed.

251 8th Street has applied for a variance to become a group home. The hearing is May 1st 3pm at council chambers.

11th and West Ave. – Drug problems in this area.

12th and West Ave – Drug problems in this area.

12th and West Ave. – Dogs barking in the area. If you have dogs barking call the police and ask them to contact the owner. They can give a ticket for repeat offenders.

The house on 17th street is to be torn down by the city. This is the house that was destroyed by fire and left one man dead.

1244 East Ave. – suspected drug activity

1108 West Ave. – There is suspected drug activity at this house. The users are going in here to do their drugs.

1012 West Ave. – Suspected drug sales at this house.

South Park – There are people paying to cut through apartments to by-pass the front gate. The rear entrances of some apartments are on the outside of the fence line so they are able to pass through these apartments to gain access to South Park. South Park management will be asked to attend the next block watch.

Please be advised that there will be a Public Utilities, Safety, & Environment meeting at 6:00pm on Wednesday evening, February 13, 2008 to discuss the matter of a daytime curfew for 17 and under. This was brought up at a few of the neighborhood watch meetings during the past several months.

Please be present and prepared to talk if you feel strongly one way or the other. If you know of others who feel strongly about the issue, please let them know of the meeting as well. If only a few people show up and voice their opinions, it would send a message that there isn't that much concern. I know some of you have voiced your complaints at the neighborhood meetings, so this is your opportunity to let council know how you feel.

There was discussion on how CDBG budget meetings.

Be sure to ask city council and police chief to start the impact unit.

Breakfast with the force 2/13/08. 251 8th St. and 709 Middle, both operating as a halfway house. The city is aware and addressing this.

Dumping behind East Ave. Convenient - City will investigate and get it cleaned up.

Middle and 9th – gunshots heard at 3:40 am on 1/29/08.

1801 Douglas – the house should be torn down next week.

755 W.17th St. – Nate’s place. The city is aware and working on the problems.

Middle Ave. re-zoning project is on the Planning Commission agenda.

Rental registration – still to come.

Trees in the treelawn that need removed – the list is about 2 years long. You must get permission to remove a tree from the parks dept. to cut down a tree on the tree lawn. The city has a $50,000 per year budgeted for this.

January Meeting Date Change

The January Block Watch meeting will be on January 29th at the Police Station 7pm instead of the January 22nd. This is due to the City Council meeting being bumped to January 22 because of the Martin Luther King Holiday. The January 22nd city council meeting is important for the block watch members to attend as the council will be holding an open public hearing on how the 2008 Community Development Block Grant money will be dispersed. This grant money is for use in the target areas, the South side is one of the prime areas of use for this money. Come and tell council how you wish for them to utilize this money.

See you on the 22nd at City Council 7pm for the public hearing and the 29th at 7pm for the South Elyria Block Watch at the Elyria Police Department.

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion.

The Police were represented by Lt. Dussel Any ideas on how to get the word out? Suggestions are welcome.

212 Gates – drug activity reported at the downstairs apartment.

351 S. Maple – house boarded up, the city is waiting before they can do something about it.

Wood St. – speeding continues. The traffic trailer was out for a while but was broke for part of the time. The computer used to record data is also broke. Children at play signs will not be installed. They haven’t been available since 1996.

The officers at Wilkes Villa are paid for by LMHA.

Citywide block watch meeting – Terry Wacker is heading up this task. He is planning on having it in late January.

It was suggested to have the meetings in other locations to bring in other residents.

Need a crossing guard at 5th/6th and West/Middle around the school. There have been problems with too many kids out at lunch around the high school.

516 Middle – the city is hoping that the owner will pay for the demo and that the city will acquire the property.

Behind East Ave. convenient there is trash dumped on the vacant streets. Foreclosure seminar at LCCC 12/1/07 8:45 am till 4 pm.

NEXT MEETING IS 1/22/08 at the Police station. NO DECEMBER MEETING.

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion.

Good and bad news about 1216.5 East Ave. They finally moved but only a block away. They are now at 1107 East Ave. 1113 East Ave is also a problem house. Now they are right next door to each other.

Fred Smith informed us that the Weed and Seed did not give Elyria a grant. They were competing against some big cities with much larger problems than we have.

Speeding on Wood Street. Continues to be a problem. The Police put out the traffic trailer and the residents sat out front and watched speed numbers.

There was a report of menacing on Sederis Lane.

Chris Baker, SEND, said a resident of the neighborhood is looking into getting security cameras that can be loaned out to residents that are having problems.

Frank’s Market is under construction. The roof is being repaired and there is a new owner. Be sure to watch the council for a liquor license application here. Let your councilmen know if you wish this to be denied.

West Ave – The home that was hit (and run) has been inspected by the city and will be repaired.

It was suggested that we have a city wide block watch meeting/party. Maybe we could do this in December around the holidays.

Sorry I was late but thanks to Chris for running things and giving me the night off. Here are the highlights of the meeting:

The Police were represented by Sgt. Pelko, Lt. Welsh, Lt. Dussel and Officer Sumpter.

1216.5 East Ave. – Continues to be a problem. Continued calls to the police, drug activities at this residence.

Residents need to speak to council and our 5th ward and council at large about the need for the impact unit to be a permanent item.

It was suggested that we have a block watch patrol. Anyone interested?

If there are children present at a problem/drug house you can call children’s services on them if the children seem to be in any danger from the activities.

More complaints about dispatchers. If you have a problem with them just ask for the officer in charge and they will resolve the issue.

Speeders on Wood Street. They will post a traffic trailer on this street to try to discourage this.

November 7th - Breakfast with the Force at SEND. 6:30 – 9am.

Elaine Hill – Family Crisis counselor from the High School said that the school could be of some help with juvenile problems. You can contact her thru the school to discuss a problem.

429 West Ave. – Suspected drug activity. This is the house where the missing girl was found. Many problems at this home.

Concerns about the security of the vacant homes owned by the school. These will soon be demolished but if you see any problems call the police or the school. Any questions about the new High School feel free to call Mr. Rigda or Rich Neilson at 284-8000.

Trash collection, high grass and property maintenance problems – call Jerry Klein or Jim Hutchinson at 326-1402

There was a request to oppose any new/transferred liquor license to Frank’s Market. Mention this to any council persons so they are aware of it.

The Church of the Open Door has volunteers who are willing to help the needy to paint or do yard work. Jerry Klein has access to paint for those who qualify.

UPDATE:

Update on a few things Jerry Klein looked into:

County records still show Meslat Mohammad as the owner of record of 1412 West Ave. (Frank’s Market), but a roofing permit was issued on 9-13-07 to Stephen Gibbons, 325 15th St. (284-2809) who claims to be the current owner. The reroof permit was issued to Wright Construction, but according to Phil Lahetta, a final inspection of the roof has not yet been made.

I asked Jim Hutchson to see if he can use his magic to get the rubbish and garbage removed from 249 Gates Ave.

I notified Don Wimsatt, Engineering Dept., of the request to put up “Children at Play” signs or another type of sign up on Wood St. to slow down the speeders. He will look at the situation and get back to me.

Jim Longstreth has not yet performed a full exterior inspection of 1216 ½ East Ave., but will this week. I asked him to ask permission from Terry Wacker and Joe Perkins, adjoining property owners, to use their properties to look in the back yard, if he can’t get permission from the tenants.

Another Update (from J.Klein):

I received a response from Don Wimsatt, Engineering Dept. He said the 25 MPH speed limit signs are in the proper locations per ODOT specs. He also said that “Children at Play” signs have not been installed since 1996 and many are being taken down and not replaced. He did say that he would talk to Captain Whitely about speed enforcement.

Missing 16yr old girl. Brown Hair med length Blue eyes 5' 3" tall thin 115 pounds. Last seen at or near 429 West Avenue Elyria Across from Elyria High School. She is most likely on the south or west side of Elyria or anywhere else in Elyria. She is wearing black converse hightops, blue jeans, black short sleeve t-shirt with pink undertrim and glitter writing on the front, Black silver studded belt. If you have seen her or have any information please call Elyria Police they are aware of the situation. Thanks in advance.

Nuisance of the Month

This property has recently become a problem. There has been drug and prostitute activity on and around this property. They are a nuisance to the surrounding neighborhood.

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion.

To start off the meeting a few candidates briefly spoke. Tim Quinn running for Mayor http://www.quinn4mayor.com/ , Marty Martinez running for school board www.angelfire.com/planet/martyelyriaschoolbrd/ and Kevin Krischer running for 5th ward council all briefly spoke while we were waiting for the police to arrive.

701 Middle Ave. – Major problems in that apartment complex. Drug activities. Also affiliated with problems at 624 Middle Ave.

Kids banging on SEND office window and opening door and yelling profanities. 1216.5 East Ave. – Suspected drug activity after school

7th Street – Yellow Mustang and red Tempo suspected drug activity behind Budget Auto.

236 7th St. – suspected drug activity, red Ford Explorer suspected.

827 East Ave – Suspected drug activity, also the house behind this home.

Wood St. – Speeders. Suggested that the police put the traffic trailer there and officers to watch the area.

Frank’s Market – maybe reopening, city to investigate if they have a building permit.

West Ave. – Last Saturday night a guy was begging door to door at 1:30 am.

Homes across from High School on Middle Ave. have been cited and in time may be torn down.

A request was made to have Paul Rigda or Rich Nielson to attend the block watch to discuss the security of the homes to be demolished. Residents are concerned that people will break in and live in them.

9/5/07 – Next school board meeting, 7pm at Elyria West. You can voice your concerns there about the demolition. There was a request for a sobriety checkpoint on the South side.

Abandoned Animal Committee

The city is looking for a volunteer public committee to address the abandoned/wild animal problem the city is facing. This committee will help find a solution to the many cats and dogs roaming the streets. If you are interested in participating in this committee call the Mayor's office at 326-1402 at let them know you want to help.

Gas USA hearing update

Yesterday the liquor control board held a public hearing. It was to start at 11:30 am but started around 12:30 due to the prior hearing running long. The Gas USA hearing lasted about 3 1/2 hours.
About 13 testified in the opposition to the license and I believe only 3 testified for the license.
The liquor control board will make the decision and that is expected in 4-6 weeks.

Gas USA hearing

The hearing for Gas USA's liquor license will be held Monday August 6th at 11:30 am in the county administration building 4th floor. If you can attend please do so.

If you cannot and want to help you can write a letter about your concerns in giving Gas USA a liquor license. The letter should be to the Ohio Liquor Control, not the city, SEND or block watch.

If you do write a letter please send it to Chris Baker at the SEND office at 606 Middle Ave in Elyria. She will bring it to the hearing. You could also email it to me mattswabb@hotmail.com or Chris sendorg@aol.com.

We need to take a stand against the problems in our community and this business has been a problem for far too long.

The topic of rude and/or non helpful dispatchers was discussed. A new quality control system has been put in place. The OIC (officer in charge) now must on a weekly basis review a certain amount of the calls on record. He will listen to the tapes and see if they were handled properly. They are in the 2nd week of this process.

If you have a problem with a dispatcher note the time and day and call the OIC and he will pull the tape and determine if the call was handled properly.

Fred Smith talked about the problem kids in the High School. He is asking for volunteers to help the 2nd Baptist Church monitor the school and help out with the unruly kids.

13th and West Avenue – continued drug related activity. The cars are now pulling into the driveways of non drug houses to conduct their business.

420 12th Street – reports of 3 dogs continuously barking.

The block watch members want the police to start a crack down on the South side. We ask that the police issue more tickets and fines for the smaller things. Once you let the delinquents get away with littering, loud music, etc. they will think they can get away with bigger crimes and they do. Not “Zero Tolerance” but to go in that direction. Focus on the zero tolerance on those who are the problems.

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion.

Tonight we had a guest speaker. Dennis Will, Lorain County Prosecutor, spoke about the process required to board up a nuisance property.

The most important thing that a resident can do is call the police and report the nuisance so they can document the problems. Any issues you can call Dennis’s office at 329-5631.

1216 ½ East Avenue has become a problem. There has been suspected drug activity coming from the 2nd floor apartment. There has been frequent stop and go visitors.

13th and West Ave. There has been drug activity in the area. Cars have been seen delivering drugs to the people in the area on the street.

Early morning drug and prostitution activity in the Middle Ave. drive thru in the 5-7am time frame.

South Park apartments. People are cutting thru the surrounding area home to gain access to the complex. Herman Larkins is addressing the South Park issue with a residents committee to solve the front gate issue.

Gas USA news

Gas USA applied for a 2nd license recently. Last month council voted to hold a public hearing for their C2 license application.

Tonight the community development voted to hold a public hearing for the new C1 liquor license for Gas USA. Not sure when the public hearing(s) will be or if they will combine them into one hearing.

Next step is for the full council to vote on whether to accept the committee's report or not. The council wil vote on July 2nd.

New block watch forming

New Downtown Coffee House

Recently a new business opened up downtown. Le Rendez Vous is a Mediterranean coffee house. They are located at 367 Broad Street between East and Middle right next to the bus station. They offer a wide variety of items on their menu. Coffees, breakfast specials, cold sandwiches, gyros, burgers, desserts, smoothies, pizza, etc. Anything from a snack to a meal and you can eat in, takeout or have downtown delivery. Very nice comfortable atmosphere and free internet so you can sit there all day.

This is a good positive addition for downtown Elyria. They are a family run business and the previous occupant of the building was Razzles bar. So anytime we displace a bar with a quality family run business it a victory for the town.

So stop on by and support a new business in the area.

Gas USA again

Gas USA is trying to slip another permit thru the system. Last month the Community Development Committee voted to request a public hearing for the Gas USA liquor license application. This was for a C2 permit, wine and prepackaged mixed drinks. The city council upheld their decision for the hearing.

At the June 4th council meeting the C1 permit (beer) for Gas USA was referred to the Community Development Committee. The meeting will be held June 25th at 6 pm. The Community Development Committee members are Forrest Bullocks, Gary Gibbs, Bonnie Ivancic, Victor Stewart and Tom Callahan. Feel free to contact them about this. Now for my thoughts. One could say that Mr. Gill, Gas USA manager, simply forgot to include the C1 on his application. Mr. Gill does this for a living and the liquor license is his #1 source of income. I highly doubt he forgot it. Would you forget something that generated that much money?

More likely story is he applied for a permit he could do without, the C2 wine permit. Then while that is going thru the public hearing system he hoped that the C1 would be overlooked by the people who oppose him.

Remember June 25th 6pm come to the City Hall council chambers to show your support for public hearing request.

New Block Watch Site

I created a new block watch forum. This is different to this current blog. But don't worry I’ll still be maintaining this site.

The new site is a phpBB style forum. The new site will contain information on all the cities block watches and have conversation forums. For those not familiar with online forums they are much more user friendly. Anyone can post comments and add any topics that they wish. A simple registration and you’re ready to go.

For example: Let’s say you want information on how to get a building permit. You go to the appropriate forum and click “new topic”. Then post your question. Then as others view the site and read the various posts they can choose to answer your question. And you can help others by answering their questions. There will be many discussions on a wide variety of subjects as this site grows.

There will be different forums for different subjects. The more members we get the better this new site can be. So join and tell your friends. Forward this site to anyone in the area.

May 22nd Block Watch meeting notes

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion.

As usual the police have been very busy making arrests and working within their tight manpower budget.

Properties across from EHS on Middle Avenue are being torn down. These are long time problem homes.

352 Maple has been boarded up since a recent drug raid. The owners will be going to court soon to see if the house will remain boarded up.

246 Wooster had a report of an abandoned dog. The dog was taken by the APC and later returned to the owner. Still neglected, neighbors will be following up in this.

610 Middle, Crystal ERA, the phone line was tapped and charges were rung up.

2000 block West Ave., recent gunfire heard. A man barricaded himself in his home and the SWAT team resolved the situation.

As reported last month, Nate at 17th and Douglas is back to his old business. The city has been to his house and he now has till 6/14/07 to correct all the code violations.

10th and West, juveniles out past 3am fighting and causing a disturbance.

Police have stepped up patrols in the West Ave area after school.

13th and West Ave., 11pm -1am, noise problems. Daytime drug sales out in the open, mostly on the weekends.

We then discussed the Gas USA issue. City council voted to hold a public hearing for Gas USA’s liquor license. The date for the hearing with the liquor control board as not yet been determined. There is more and more evidence that the Gas USA liquor license is a bad idea. Keep checking the block watch site for details.

The first step in stopping the Gas USA liquor license is completed. The community development committee recommends that the city does request a public hearing for the new liquor license. This recommendation now will go before full council on Monday May 21st.

Over 30 residents came to the committee meeting. I did speak against the license, hopefully I did OK. Herman Larkins did speak for the license. He believes that the “new” management will do a good job with Gas USA.

Stay tuned for future news about this. We will need all the people we can get to attend the public hearing. Last hearing was during the daytime. Later this week I will post the email address of the contact at the liquor control board so we can request that the hearing be at a time so more residents can attend.

This is going before the Community Development Committee Monday May 14, 2007 at 6pm in the city council chambers. Please attend and voice your concerns for this issue. South Elyria Neighborhood Watch meeting minutes 4/24/07

Here are the highlights of tonight’s discussion. Sgt. Pelko represented the Elyria Police Department. Sgt. Pelko reported that the police have been very busy making arrests throughout the city. They’ve been averaging 12 arrests per day.

Residents asked if there was a way to check with the Cleveland police about the crime at the Liberty Gas station on 14510 Kinsman Ave. This is the other store owned/operated by the Gas USA owners.

Reports of people still cutting through yards to enter into South Park Apartments illegally.

Noise ordinance. The ordinance is very broad. The police usually give a warning then if they called back they issue a ticket. They have the ability to confiscate the noisy equipment for up to 24 hours.

353.5 Maple, 520?? Middle Ave. and 111 Madison are slated for demolition.

There have been more kids/people hanging out on the corner of 13th and West Ave.

Gerry Kline (assistant safety service director) said that the city is working on nuisance ordinances. This will allow the city to board up and/or take control over a problem house.

A request was made to ask Dennis Will (Lorain County Prosecutor) to come to a future meeting to discuss what is needed to board up a nuisance house.

There is a need for speed enforcement on West River Rd. South. The trucks that work in the area are gong too fast. Sgt. Pelko said he would have his officers watch the area closer.

Suspect on the Loose

Police informed us last evening at the Colonial Oaks Block Watch that they are looking for a suspect that has eluded police on two separate occasions. He is wanted for 3 counts of grand theft auto, assaulting two police officers, resisting arrest and is a suspect in the armed robbery of the former "Frank's Market" located at West and 15th Street on Friday night.

Armed robbery and shots fired on West Ave.

April 6th around 9:55pm Midtown Market (Franks Market) at 1412 West Ave. was robbed by an armed man wearing a mask. As reported in the Chronicle a black male dressed in black wearing a black mask and sunglasses committed the crime. He pulled a small gray pistol and fled with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries reported.

From the police scanner a resident reported gun shots fired in the area around 10th and West Ave. on Saturday night April 7th. Police did not find anyone in the area.

Be careful out there.

For as many years as most of us can remember Gas USA has been the eyesore of the South side. Open 24 hours, liquor sales, tobacco products used in drug use and more. Nicknamed “Crack USA” you could drive down and buy most any type of drug in the parking lot and for a few more $’s get a female to accompany you. A person could go there at any time and buy liquor. They sold blunts which are commonly used by drug users to smoke their marijuana. Here’s a good definition of “blunt”. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=blunt

They also sold them pre-hollowed out so the user wouldn’t need to do the work. Also sold the ‘flower vase” crack pipes. These are small flowers in small vases that crack users use to smoke crack. http://www.kcentv.com/news/local-article-arch.php?nid=9442

In the past they have had many infractions such as selling alcohol and tobacco products to underage users. Many crimes were committed on their property and they did nothing to prevent them.

Last fall they applied for a renewal liquor license. A few residents and the school superintendent spoke against Gas USA and the license was denied. Here is a copy of the renewal denial:

So shortly after the denial the “new” owners appeared and were asking the city to work with them. During this meeting with the city they mentioned that they own a similar station in Cleveland at 14510 Kinsman. Rumor has it is they have been silent partners for 5 years (the worst years in Gas USA history) despite saying they are “new” owners. Gas USA did shut down for a few weeks due to billing issue with the power company and reopened in January. Now the new owner is asking for community support. He claims they will serve hot food, have groceries, check cashing, bill paying, re-furbished exterior and other services. And if wanted by the community he will apply for a liquor license.

So recently I took a trip out to the other store at 14510 Kinsman. What a dump
nothing special on the outside, very similar to Gas USA, just as dirty. Then I went inside. This place is a dump. Dirty inside as well.

So why would they come all the way out to Elyria and put money into Gas USA when they obviously haven’t put a penny into their other store? I’m still leery about the whole thing. Let’s wait and see if he will stick to his word.

Tuesdays Block Watch

Hi Everyone,

I really enjoyed the block watch meeting this evening. It was wonderful to see several new faces. I am so excited every time another wonderful neighbor attends. As I shared this evening, it is so important that we all continue to work together. We are beginning to see the impact of the hard work that each of you have contributed to improving our neighborhood. I am very thankful that each one of you has decided to continue to live in our neighborhood and to contribute by becoming a vehicle for the change that is happening right before our eyes.

Two of my favorite bible verses are found in Proverbs 29:18"Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he." (KJV)

And Matthew 22:37-40Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (KJV)

The law in the Old Testament is the Ten Commandments confirmed by Jesus in the New Testament. Essentially if we love God first and treat our neighbors as we treat our self we will not have difficulty following the original law given to Moses on Mount Sinai.

Now we know that in the 21st century our society has strayed from this theology and we unfortunately are living with the effects of that failure to keep the law.

What I have seen during this past two or so years has been the creation of a vision for our neighborhood and our city as a whole. The vision developed by the people who are no longer sitting idly by and allowing things to be done to them and living in fear.(perishing) But those of you who have begun to stand for your right to quality of life, peace, and your right to live a life free of intimidation from criminals.So we no longer are a people without a vision.

I believe we all want a safe, clean, healthy community. I believe it is that vision that all of you have so wonderfully described in all of the public forums, which has created the feeling of hope for others.

I appreciate all of you! For all of your patience, for (believe it or not) all the phone calls, messages, and the time you have spent helping us to create and share in your vision. I say "your" but this is my neighborhood too, so it is my passion to create an environment that is the engine for rejuvenation not just in the neighborhood, but in the lives of those living in this neighborhood as well.

Well as my husband always says I could talk for ever. So thank you all, I look forward to reading all of your comments.

We had a discussion of the recent 5th ward town hall meeting that was hosted by Herman Larkins, 5th ward councilman.

Fred Smith spoke a little about the Weed and Seed grant application with the Ohio Department of Justice. The target area has an opportunity to receive 5 million dollars over a 5-year period. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ccdo/ws/welcome.html

The topic of curfew was discussed. Currently the curfew is 11pm for all children 17 and under and children ages 16 and 17 can stay out until 1 am on Friday and Saturday.

Since Elyria doesn’t have a loitering ordinance it was suggested that maybe the police could break up larger loitering groups due to unlawful assembly. The police didn’t know if this could apply to the loitering problem.

There was a lengthy discussion of housing in the area. Gerry Kline assistant safety service director and former building inspector was on hand to answer the questions. He said that change have and will been made on how they inspect in the target area. They will focus more on the worst homes instead of the systematic way they have been doing the inspections.

Money is available to board up vacant homes ($33,400). If a home is vacant and in disrepair or a nuisance the inspector can board up the home. If there is a vacant home that is a problem in your area then contact the building department about it.

If you are a renter you can file a complaint to the housing department against your landlord and you will not suffer any consequences.
The police are still without a contract; this has been going on about a year and is now in arbitration.

There was a request to have a meeting with the candidates running for the 5th ward and at large council seats. Possibly they could attend the next block watch meeting in April.

And finally Ken Singh from Gas USA spoke about his business. Ken recently took sole control over the business. He plans to make this a nicer neighborhood business. The name will be changed, outside upgrades, hot food inside. Lets hope for the best.
